What are probiotics?

The term "probiotics" is used to describe foods and supplements which possess "good bacteria" that is beneficial to the human body. Our digestive tract contains around 500 different types of bacteria. Most of this bacteria is good for our health and considered friendly, but our bodies also contain bad bacteria. It is believed that probiotic foods or supplements can reduce bad bacteria in the digestive system.

A healthy functioning digestive system contains around 85% of good bacteria. The good bacteria keeps us healthy by protecting our immune system and sustaining the lining of the bowel. Stress, antibiotics, poor water quality and a diet lacking in essential nutrients can cause an imbalance in this bacteria. If bad bacteria like salmonella and E.coli are allowed to flourish they overrun the good bacteria, which leads to health complications.

HEALTH COMPLICATIONS OF AN IMBALANCED DIGESTIVE SYSTEM:

When the digestive system is not functioning to its full ability the body fails to digest food correctly. This means the vitamins and minerals in the food we consume are not adequately absorbed and in turn can lead to many illnesses.

SYMTOMS OF AN IMBALANCED DIGESTIVE SYSTEM

If the digestive system contains more then 15% of bad bacteria the following physical symptoms can occur:

-Stomach cramps
-Excessive gas
-Diarrhea and
-Bloating

HOW A PROBIOTIC CAN HELP:

Research into probiotics is still in the formative stage so there is still much to be determined about probiotics. However, there is good evidence that probiotics assist with some conditions and a belief that they could assist with others.

There is good evidence supporting that probiotics help with:

-Diarrhea
-Urinary tract infections
-Irritable bowel syndrome
-Assisting in the treatment of an intestinal infection
-Dermatitis
-Respiratory infections
-In animal studies they have demonstrated a cholesterol lowering ability.

Although not scientifically proven many people believe probiotics:

-Boost the immunity
-Assist with healing stomach ulcers
-Prevent tooth decay and gum disease
-Assist with healing yeast infections
-Reduce the effects of allergies
-Reduce the effects of lactose intolerance

SOURCES OF PROBIOTICS:

Supplements include; capsules, tablets and powders.

Foods include; yoghurt, milk, miso, enriched juices and soy products. Some foods naturally contain probiotic properties, but others have the bacteria added during preparation like juice
