We all want the best for our children, especially when it comes to nutrition. We try to keep them away from high sugar drinks and high fat foods, as well as many others. While keeping our children away from unhealthy substances is important we should be thinking more about what they should be eating or drinking.
We all know milk is good for them; we try to make sure that they get the proper amount every day. But is cow's milk the only way they can get this and is there an alternative that may be better for them?
Children digest milk better than adults. There is an enzyme contained in the stomach that helps with its digestion. As we age, we lose this enzyme which starts to make our body digest less and less of it. Soy milk is much easier to digest.
Soy milk also contain better nutritional value that regular cow's milk. Soy milk is a good source of many vitamins and minerals including protein, A, C, D, E, B6, Iron, Zinc and many others.
Per serving, soy milk is also lower in calories; cow's milk contains 50 percent more calories. It is also lower in fat by at least half. Also, soy contains no cholesterol unlike milk, which contains about 35mg.
In addition to this, soy milk is also lower in sodium, contains more dietary fiber, vitamin A, Vitamin D, and Iron. Soy milk contains the same amount of calcium as regular milk.
The world is talking about how omega-3 fatty acids help the development of an infant's brain. Fortunately, soy milk contains high levels.
Soy milk can be substituted in recipes as well, no conversion necessary. This makes it easier to eat healthier and lowering any cholesterol or caloric intake.
Some children are allergic to milk, or lactose intolerant. While children can be allergic to soy products, the instances are rarer. This ensures that they are provided with the proper amount of calcium for bone growth and development.
In addition to that actual nutritional value of soy milk, there are many other benefits. Soy milk does not contain casein; this has been thought to increase the instances of autism. Even if it hasn't been proven, you are still taking a step in the case it is.
Of course where soy is just starting to make its debut into more and more American homes, more studies need to be done to link certain disease prevention to soy milk, but in time this will happen. In the meantime, the benefits outweigh any possible risk.
Soy milk comes in many flavors as well. For those who don't like cow's milk, or the taste of it, you can pick up a container of the flavored kind so it can be incorporated into your diet. Don't be fooled into thinking that cow's milk is the only way to go. As research suggests, soy milk instead of cow's milk is the way to go.
