Ah,the memories of fishing! There are so many! It happens to be one of our favorite things to do for weekend getaways and vacations,so we go fishing alot.Usually, with my expert husband things always go pretty normal,as he is experienced with both the ice fishing in the North and the good old Southern Crappie,Bass and Blue Gill fishing with me.And he very seldom gets real excited about much of anything.
There is a nice catfish lake we visit every now and then, where there are some mighty big ones out there just waiting to be caught. And we do our best to bring in a few of them.
One Saturday evening we were there and had taken our pick up truck. We backed up so we could sit and watch our rods under the edge of the camper to keep dry, since it had started a light rain. There were quite a few people around the lake that night, you could hear the hear the low hum of talking and laughter as we all sat and waited for that mighty bite.
All of a sudden one of our rods started bouncing! "I'll get that.Stay there out of the rain" said my husband,as he hopped off the end of the truck.{Such a gentleman} Off he hurried to snatch up the rod before the fish took the bait and got away. As he neared the slightly sloped edge of the lake, and bent to grab the quivering fishing rod,the grass, which was slick from the rain sent him into a spin! He was so determined not to fall and embarrass himself with people watching, so he threw up one leg in a kind of pirouette style and began turning, turning and turning, like the little ballerina in a jewelery box!
All over the lake you could hear,'Oh my gosh!','There he goes!", "He's going in!", "Oh no,he's gonna fall in the lake!"
And he did!So beautifully! I was holding my breath, not sure whether to try to help or burst into laughter. Down he went, after the third or fourth spin, into the lake, back first! It was terrible but,I'm sorry,it was so hilarious!
I almost immediately started spewing laughter from behind my hands, and could not stop! My dear husband who, thank goodness,is such a good sport, stands up and says, "Well, the fish didn't get away." People were laughing, clapping and cheering everywhere. We had all been there once in our lives I'm sure,or close. He climbed up onto the bank, rod in hand and reeled that catfish on into the bank. He may have had to get wet,but he definitely had the catch of the evening! It was one more beauty! Everyone came around to check it out,pat him on the back, offer towels, tell him what a great move that was ! It was one of the best fishing excursions we have ever had!
And needless to say,we HAVE been back..caught many more, but nothing has happened any where near the fun that happened that day. Definitely a day to remember!
