Cayman Islands: After hurricane Dean

Cayman Islands had faced the threat of one of the worst hurricane that ever trekked the Caribbean. It was a powerful storm during the Atlantic hurricane season in August of 2007 and had posed great destruction to countries it had directly hit causing a big loss in properties, infrastructures as well as lives.

The intensity 5 hurricane lowered to intensity 4 as it passed near the territory of Cayman Islands and had answered the prayers of the residents due to the possible large amount of destruction that it could cause. The storm passed the country with lesser destruction than what was expected.

DEAN SPARED CAYMAN ISLANDS

The category 4 hurricane with wind speed of 150 mph spared the country on Monday, August 20, after it had caused much destruction on nearby Jamaica. It skirted out Cayman Islands and passed about 100 miles south of it. The greatest wind that was recorded to have been felt in the country was only 57 mph. It may still be a threat but it caused a lesser destruction. However, after it passed the country, it had posed greater threat on Mexico as it continues to maintain its destructive speed.

THE TRAVEL ADVISORIES

The US State Department issued travel advisories on August 17, 2007 to its residents who are going to travel to both Jamaica and Cayman Islands two days before the expected hit of the storm. Advisories on flight cancellation at anytime were given out to make the residents safe all throughout the course of the storm. The citizens were advised to always bring with them their travel documents and put it is safe and waterproof compartments. Emergency numbers were also given out and the residents were advised to familiarize themselves with the evacuation plans and places where their safety would be preserved.

In relation to the US travel advisories, the local government of Cayman Islands helped evacuate about 6000 visitors by Sunday night. The Cayman Airways had utilized both its chartered and private planes just to accommodate visitors who wanted to travel out of the country about three days before the storm was expected to arrive.

THE AFTERMATH

The effects of the tropical cyclone had caused large destruction in countries in the Mexican Peninsula as well as in Caribbean. It may not have directly hit Jamaica and Cayman Islands, but the fierce of the storm was still felt but the destruction was of lesser intensity.
