Insurance to Buy, After the DUI
A very, extremely expensive one, I am certain. The after effects from having a DUI, will cost yoou in many ways, money is just one of them. The circumstances also depend on what happened along with the DUI? Was there an accident, someone hurt? Do you need your license back after a suspension? Was there a driving school the judge may have sentenced you to? Was jail time included?
If any of this is so, then you will first go to the courthouse to get an SR22. I do not know the purchase price or fee of this, but it will be expensive and if your license was pulled, this is needed for getting your insurance back again. Other history of previous DUIs will be needed in order to find the best rate for you. Call around for rates.
Then, I would look for those off the wall insurance agencies you find in the shopping centers. They have three levels of companies and tend to insure anyone within the bottom level company. They may be cheap but they may not stay around too long either. Otherwise the Progressive Insurance Company would be the best. They specialize in only in the insurance of people with a past of problems, and a DUI would fit the bill. Progressive Insurance is also keyed in to others on their computers, to prove they are cheaper for you. They also insure people who need motorcycle insurance. For that, you do not have to have bad driving record for the motorcycle insurance.
Now if you area good driver, Progressive is not for you. But if you are a young driver, on your own insurance, or an older driver with problems, my bet would be Progressive. Those shopping center, quaint, small insurance companies are fine, but Progressive has been around a long time, doing the same thing. They are reputable and solid. They are stable enough to be around for years. And people with DUIs, with SR22s, one wreck after another, no previous insurance, little driving experience and single, this is the best company any one can count on, especially in your shoes.
But if you can keep a good driving record, other insurance companies will write you into their companies, saving you money. But that will come later, in time.
*Suggestion: Buy the cheapest car you can afford, out right, without a lender. Then you can have liability only, it will help. And stay away from drinking when you have to drive.
Also, in case it is needed, Progressive has a wonderful system for claims adjusting, should an accident occur. Let's hope not. Oh, and next time, be careful, there are other people on the road who would not like to run into you on the highway.
