Terrorism

How did the United States become a target for terrorism?

After World War II, the Western allies decided to establish a homeland for Jewish refugees. Former Nazi ruler, Adolf Hitler attempted to exterminate the entire race during his European domination. After six million were killed in his concentration camps, Jewish families fled Europe. A border was created in the Transjordan region. The new land became Israel. A Jewish nation laid amidst hostile Arab territory.

Since that period, the United States supported Israel's existence. Millions of Arabs were subjugated by the "Zionist invasion". War soon erupted in 1948. For decades, Jewish armies, backed by money and arms sent by America, battled Egyptian, Jordanian, Syrian and Palestinian armies and their PLO (Palestine Liberation Organization), Hezbollah and Hamas terrorists' allies. In response, America's military invaded the Middle East. In 1983, we lost 243 Marines in a suicide bombing in Lebanon. In 1988, 38 sailors died when an Iraqi fighter jet attacked a Navy ship patrolling the Persian Gulf. We also lost over 4,000 soldiers killed and over 60,000 injured and maimed from two wars in 1991 and 2003. In between the conflicts, 3,000 American civilians were killed by terror attacks in Washington and New York.

The federal government intervened Middle Eastern affairs at our own peril. Giving arms to Israel, giving Iraqi children freedom or stealing Iraqi oil reserves has left America vulnerable to a worldwide enemy called terrorism. Osama Bin Laden's attack on 9/11 had a rippling effect similar to the two students who shot up Columbine High School in 1999. They are legions of Islamic "jihadists" vying to duplicate and one-up Al Qaida's mass murder of Americans. The threat would stop if America left the Middle East region. However, President Bush and our country's addiction to oil won't allow for that withdrawal.

Over the weekend, another five soldiers died in "maintaining security" in Iraq. But, another day went by with no terror attacks on U.S. soil. Once again, National Security and greed validated the cost of sacrificing only a few lives against thousands.
