You can improve your golf score dramatically if you take the time to tame the beast that is your swing. To see the results of what a consistent swing will do for your game, take the following plan with you to the driving range and practice. It is the best way to develop consistency.
The golf swing starts with addressing the ball. Start with your usual stance and place the ball either in the middle or an inch or two back in your stance. After some a few shots, you will get a sense of the right place that will result in your desired ball flight and what feels most comfortable.
The next little trick is to move your hands towards your front leg. For right-handed golfers, your left arm should be straight (or close to it) and almost be parallel to the left side of your torso. As a result, your hands and wrists should now be cocked and in the position similar to what they should be at impact. Also, you have now taken away some loft from your club. This will increase your distance while decreasing your ball's trajectory. The added distance will come in handy for one of the tips to come. Some players find that losing the loft makes it more difficult to a driver. If this is the case, then it may be beneficial for you to invest in a driver with a higher loft.
Now that you have a stance down, then the next thing to do is to actually swing the club. The first key here is balance. I do not mean that you need to make sure that you are not falling over, though that is not a good thing, either. What I mean is that your backswing and follow through should be mirror images of each other. If you rotate your torso 90 degrees on your backswing, then they should rotate out 90 degrees on your follow through. The same should be true for your knees, hips, and hands.
Once you are balanced, go ahead and hit a few more balls and take care to notice two things during your swing: where your hands are located at the top of your backswing and where they wind up on shots that you feel are well hit.
In thinking about your backswing, it is important to think about baseball players for a moment. If you want to be a consistent ball striker, then you have to think of yourself as a singles hitter that makes good contact with each swing and not the slugger who may hit a lot of home runs at the cost of frequently striking out. The singles hitter typically has a short, compact swing while the power hitter has a much longer swing. The longer swing produces more
