Kitesurfing or Kiteboarding as it is called, brings back fond memories of kite flying in my childhood days. It was a big deal at our home, where we got together as a family and constructed our own kites and bursting with excitement we gazed as our handiwork soared above us. Kitesurfing has the added bonus of taking you along for the ride.
What is Kitesurfing?
It is a sport that combines Kiteflying, surfing and wakeboarding. It requires a directional board like a surf board with foot straps and a kite with sufficient power to pull you. It can take you through the water, above the water to some thirty feet or more. You kite would have a control bar that you hold onto and by which you can navigate.
The Cost Factor
Expect to invest somewhere around $900.00 to $4,000 for the essentials of Kitesurfing which are the kite, a harness and a board. The price you pay for equipment would depend upon the quality, whether you purchase new or used and who much optional equipment you need. Do shop around there are always great deals to be had. Ensure that you know to assemble the equipment properly and try it on for a good fit.
Essential Equipment:
1) Kite: Choosing the right kite size is important depending on the wind strength. You will need to determine the Aspect Ratio (AR) which determines the kite's exposure to the wind as well as wind angles. As a beginner, you would want to use a "Trainer Kite" which doesn't propel you up but allows you to practice steering and maneuvering. You can also take your pick from Inflatable Kites, Bow Kites, Foil Kites, Hybrid or SLE Kites that sport different features to suit your particular preference.
2) Harness: There are three types of harnesses available; the seat type which allows you to surf with less effort, the waist type harness which is the most popular and the vest harness which protects you from impact and is also a flotation device.
3) Board: Here you also have a wide choice from different kinds of kiteboards. Choose a shape and style that is in keeping with your level of expertise, weather conditions and your personal style. You can also use standard surf boards
4) Control Bar: These are strong, lightweight bars that are attached to your kite. It provides you with something to hold on to and more importantly, allows you to control the kite.
Training
You can conceivably get on a kiteboard without any training but it is not recommended.
Lessons can cost from about $50.00 up for a beginner.
