When you start to look for a job in the beauty industry, there are a lot of different salons you can choose from. It's good to look at all the salons available, because you may not be happy with all of them. As a person, you have certain needs. When looking for your salon, ask as many questions as it takes to find out if they will meet your needs.
First, you need to decide if you want to booth rent or be an employee. This will narrow down the search a bit. Not all salons do both or either one. Once that is decided, you need to come up with a schedule that you will want to work with. What hours are good for you and what days you want off. Some salons are open all the time and others close on certain days. This will help you come up with your schedule.
Next, you want to know about the benefits the salons offer if you are wanting to work as an employee. Most of the time, your benefits will be determined by the hours you will be working.
Another important step is to find out what kind of clientele the salon has. If this fits your ideal clientele, then perfect. The clientele type is determined on the average types of services the salon's clients receive, the type of products the clients buy, and the attitude of the over all clients that come in. You have to decide what you expect from your clients, what you want to get from them, and what kind of relationship you want with them. You could have clients that don't want to talk, only get haircuts as their primary service, and don't stick with one stylist... Or you want a client that will come back to you every time, gets hair color as their primary service, and wants a good and trusting relationship with their stylist. Once you decide what clientele is for you, there is only one way to find out what type the salon has... You need to go in and get a service done yourself. This will not only show you what clientele goes in, it will also show you what kind of employees are working in this salon.
The next important thing to know is, if you like the type of employees that work there and the ones you think would be hired by the salon. This can make you or break you. You do not want to work for a salon that hires stylists that don't care about their clients or fellow employees. This will cause problems in the future, and working in a salon is stressful enough so you don't need this added stress.
When you've narrowed the search to just a few salons... You should start putting in applications. When you get an interview, you should look presentable and professional. Be sure to have the answer to this question, "Why should we hire you." You need to make it seem as though they need you, whether it's to bring them more clients or to make things run better in their salon. If there were any questions you had left unanswered... Now is the time to get the answers. Make sure the wage you are being paid is clear, and the hours is also important. Some salons take time to call you back and others call the next day. Go back to check in twice, normally if they haven't called after the second check in, they aren't interested or they don't need another employee. Some salons are too busy and they might have forgotten about you. Have fun and good luck.
