If you want to get somewhere, but you're in no hurry to do so, you drive. You put a little wear and tear on your treads. But, if you want to get there fast, you go to the air, and you fly. The same can be said of the NFL. You run to wear down a defense, you run to wear down the clock, and you run to protect a lead. But, when you need points and you need them fast, you fly. The wide receiver position, it attracts the high rollers, the biggest trash talkers, and the prima-donnas. They are the guys who insist that if you just get them the ball, every time, you're going to win. Love them, or hate them, nothing brings a crowd to it's feet quicker then a deep ball, a spectacular one-handed grab, or a tip-toeing sideline snare.
This year's draft class features no distinguished, clear cut number one receiver. Check the draft boards, flip through the journals, virtually everyone has someone different as their number one man. While it lacks a clear cut number one guy, it makes up for in shear depth. This is quite possibly one of, if not the, deepest unit of WR's in draft history. We will likely see guys taken in the second and third round, who in normal years would be competing for the top receiver billing. So if you're a team in need of receiver help this could very well be the year to do it. There won't be any receivers taken in the top ten, but come mid-round of the first round, the names will start get called, and they'll get called often in every round.
1) Malcolm Kelly- Oklahoma: 6-4, 218; 39 games 144 receptions, 2285 yards, 21 TD.
What the scouts are saying:
Kelly brings great size and adequate speed to the table. He's got great hands and long arms to make the difficult catches. Kelly is one of the strongest receivers in the draft. He won't be bullied at the line of scrimmage and will knock down defenders to get extra yards. Despite only adequate speed, has shown the ability to separate from coverage. Kelly will need to work on route running and despite his strength isn't a great blocker. He's been inconsistent and has mental lapses, especially when he's not involved in the play.
My Dish:
Kelly has unlimited potential, but would be best served on a team with an experienced coaching staff who can work on those consistency issues. He may not blossom right away, but given time he should prove to be the cream of this year's crop of WR, and he'll likely find himself as the first receiver off the board.
2) Early Doucet- LSU: 6-0, 212; 47 games,
