UEFA quarter-final analysis: Bayern Munich vs. Getafe

A scintillating quarter-final UEFA Cup second leg match between Getafe and Bayern Munich with the eyes of both the viewers eyes were glued-to-the-screen or if you were at Coliseum Alfonso Perez were glued-to-the-pitch.

This dame in its degree of importance for both clubs did not disappointment the spectators from either side in a high-tension goal-scoring affair.

The only disappointment was Italian striker Luca Toni to barrage the Getafe defence netting in two in the late stages of extra time.

Everything thing was going wrong for Getafe manager Michael Laudrup was preparing his teams funeral with the grim reaper signalling the death for his club in the UEFA Cup tournament.

The promising young midfielder Ruben de la Red was taking an early shower with Swiss referee Massimo Busacca on a fowl on Miroslav Klose in the starting minutes of the first half.

10-man Getafe have a very difficult task in facing the favourites, Bayern have a one-man advantage and seem to be-in-the-drivers-seat on cruising through to the semi-finals.

Like in the first meeting between these two teams Romanian defender Cosmin Contra, once again proven to be the annoying pest for Bayern.

Making a bursting run through defenders and firing a smashing shot screaming past the helpless goalkeeper Oliver Khan knocking him flat-on-his-pants.

Starting the second half in controversy when Getafe conceded a free-kick to Bayern a few yards on the edge of the box that bounced into the far corner it was disallowed by the referee due to a questionable fowl on the Germans in the area.

Former Marseille Midfielder Frank Ribery drilled a shot in the low-right corner which goalkeeper Roberto (Pato) Abbondanzieri could not stop.

Khan never had a chance in stopping the 32-year-old midfielder Casquero sublime long-range shot from about 20-yards-out that hit-off the post and in the net giving his side a one goal lead.

Defender Lucio is usually reliable to routinely clear-out a ball out of harms way when it gets sent into the penalty area. At the worst possible time to make a mistake is in the 92nd minute in extra-time.

At the 93rd minute mark Lucio's defensive mishap in the six-yard box, not being hurried by an attacking player to rush the Brazilian, instead, he slipped and Getafe striker Braulio spun-off Lucio and blasts it in the back of the net with Khan helpless again making the score a shocking 3-1 lead.

Being a man short would not slow down the debutants of this European tournament, Getafe brought-the-game to Bayern, who, at this point, was on the brink of being knocked-out.

Appearing only in their 12th UEFA Cup match against their illustrious opponents who are playing in their 329th fixture in their clubs history seemed as though they would advance to the semi-finals.

But the World Cup winner Toni would not be so generous in giving the new comers them the victory, instead he netted his two goals both in the last five minutes of extra time.

Pato was not able to hold-on to the looped in ball and juggled a routine save with Toni gently poking it in the net with only five minutes remaining. And a typical Toni goal just seconds before the match ending, the tall Italian rose the highest and headed the ball passed Pato and the Getafe defence.

Their next opposition will be Russian side Zenit St Petersburg in the final four.
