About the Migraine Symptoms and Treatment

AM I JUST CRAZY?
A surprising percentage of adults suffer with headaches more than a quarter of every month they live, and while treatments reduce frequency and severity, for many it becomes a way of life that is depressing enough (as all chronic pain is) without our friends, family, and co-workers practically calling us crazy. There isn't much that a friend can do for someone with a headache, but being understanding IS a whole lot that can be done!

HELP! MY MOTHER/SISTER/BROTHER/CHILD/LO VER/NIECE/ GREAT-AUNT-AGATHA IS GETTING TERRIBLE HEADACHES! WHAT DO I DO?
I know many people who have been asking just that question (well, not that exact question they normally only had one of the /'s included) and as a faithful, first-hand pupil of the pain caused by Migraine, I have often wished I could just hand an essay to my friends and family to help them understand what is going on in the life of their beloved and what they can do to help. SO I finally decided I would write one. Most of all one can help by realizing that headaches ("Migraines" are the layman's term for the really, really bad ones, and typically are what the doctor will call them too, though one's headache might be something technically different such as a Cluster Headache) are a real medical problem and a real pain!
If you or someone you know get's headaches repeatedly, it is NOT ok to "pop pills" all the time to keep on keeping on with life. Even over the counter type medication can cause "Rebound headaches" which frequently become so troublesome it takes hospitalization to get back on track. Pain is our body's way of screaming; listen to it.

HISTORY
Migraines are a medical crisis that has been sadly misused by most of mankind for most of our history: they are simply the excuse of an unreasonable housewife or irritable father, or nothing more than the empathy-seeking creation' of the mind of a teenage girl. This, as doctors are for the most part are coming to understand, is about as true as any blanket stereotype; meaning not credible at all. Migraines are as real, honest-to-God, cross-my-heart-and-hope-to-die , stick-a-needle-in-my-eye (left, to be precise; which I sometimes think just MIGHT help!) a medical condition of the brain as a stroke or a seizure. We migraine sufferers just do not have the honor of a publicly humiliating occurrence every so often like a stroke or a seizure to prove we aren't "imagining them". But so as far as
