If you don't have children or you've only raised boys, finding a gift for a young girl is not easy. Below are some tried and true gift ideas for young girls. Actual young girls have stated that they would appreciate getting any of these gifts.

The first set of suggestions is for people who want to run out to a store and grab a gift, stuff it into a gift bag, and take it to the party.

1. Art Supplies / Coloring things: If you choose this route, make sure that both pens/pencils and paper are in the set. One without the other is not very useful.
2. Jigsaw Puzzles: Remember this is for a young girl. Think girly things. Cute dogs and kittens, horses, fantasy characters, or call their mother and ask what their favorite television character is.
3. Play Makeup: With this gift, call the parent first to see if this is okay with them. Some parents do not approve of makeup on young girls, even for play. If the parent is undecided, remind them that the young girl will be grown before they know it and by playing with makeup, they'll be learning how to put it on and how "not" to put it on.
4. Craft Kits: Many stores have an abundance of craft kits. Again, think "young girl". Jewelry, piggy banks, hair accessories, clothing, adding decoration to clothing, painting, and sewing kits are good for young girls.
5. PJ's: Call the parents for size information or buy something on the "large" side. Sleeping in something too big is much more comfortable than sleeping in something too tight.
6. Purse: Girls love to put things in bags. All types of bags. Big, little, sequined, sparkly, furry, or feathery. This is a woman in the making - think purses.
7. DVD's: Find out the hottest new movie that has recently come out on DVD. Make sure that it's age-appropriate and this gift will be a hit.
8. Hair things: Girls and their hair are always popular. Comb, brush, and mirror sets: This goes along with the item above. Hair and girls. Need I say more?
9. Etch-a-Sketch: This game has universal appeal. Everyone loves to twist and turn the knobs.
10. Small Stuffed Animals: Young girls love cute, cuddly, soft, and furry stuffed animals. Big, little, maybe even medium sized ones are loved. Just about every girl loves stuffed animals.
11. Stickers: It is not a scientific fact, but for some reason, most girls love stickers.
12. Jump Rope: This time honored game is great for kids everywhere.
