All of Our Kids Are Morbidly Obese!
Recently the schools have decided to become health providers by wholeheartedly embraced the hysteria in the larger culture that we call "the obesity epidemic." The schools have eagerly hopped onto the big-money bandwagon of "obesity" and are telling us our kids are all fat. Not to worry, they are here to help!
What exactly is "obesity?" There seem to be about as many definitions for it as there are organizations and businesses "battling the epidemic." For example, by most definitions of "obese" whether it's the American Medical Association or more obviously money-oriented businesses like Weight Watchers, most of the linebackers in the NFL are "obese," meaning simply that their weight is far greater than "average" (?) for their height. You tell those guys they are fatsos. Double dog dare ya!
Some point to the type II diabetes "epidemic" in America as proof of the "obesity epidemic." There's little doubt that diabetes rates are rising in America. Just as the rates of just about every other disease are rising, too. That's what happens in a growing population with greater lifespan. As with so many other so-called "lifestyle diseases" the jury is still out on whether increasing diabetes rates has more to do with better and more screening, diet itself, genetic tendency and the fact that more of us now more of us-including kids-live long enough to develop conditions like diabetes.
Another reality is, Americans are simply getting bigger. The availability of more than adequate amounts of high-quality foods is naturally leading to bigger people. Not just around the middle, either. We're taller and have larger frames on average than were Americans of previous centuries. It only makes sense that we'd weigh more, too. Yet, those for whom the "obesity epidemic" means billions of dollars every year, insist that just because our very frames are increasing in size, that's no reason our weight should, too! They tell us there is no reason a woman standing 5-feet 8-inches tall should weigh more than her grandmother, who stood 5'-4" The granddaughter must be obese. And they have just the pill, potion, book, device or service to "save" her!
To be sure, some kids are too sedentary, and the availability of inexpensive foods that tend to be unhealthful and to pack on the pounds is one of the prices we pay for our affluence in America. There are some who eat too much and gain unhealthy amounts of adipose (fat)
