Staying fit is more than just adequate diet and exercise; it's a lifestyle. The average American will say that there just isn't enough time to take an hour a day to exercise, and that organic "good" foods cost too much. What with kids and holding jobs, leisure time in the form of watching t.v. and playing video games is more valuable to us than is our physical and mental health. But, these are typical mindsets that contribute to sedentary and just plain boring lives. Staying fit should also be synonymous with "having fun" and "being spontaneous." Here are some great ways to begin the stay-fit lifestyle.
1. Balance work and leisure.
Staying fit doesn't just imply physical stamina or health; it also speaks handfuls about a person's mental health, too. If work is cutting you down and stressing you out, making the most out of your off days should be one of your top priorities. Instead of letting loose on the couch, go out with the family or with friends. Take your dog out for a walk, visit a museum, go to the beach, or ride your bike. These will only take a couple hours or so out of your typical weekend, and they're easy to fit into any hectic schedule. Riding a bike for thirty minutes invigorates both body and mind.
2. Meditate.
Strong mental faculties develops strong physical faculties. A healthy mind is a good foundation on which to build an even healthier body. Try meditating twice a week. This is definitely something you can't do in your home if you have a child in his "terrible-two's" running around screaming, "Watch Barney!" But, if you go to a park and sit on the grass, it's terribly easier. You can also drop off your kids at a babysitter's, and you and your significant other can meditate together.
3. Food in moderation.
This isn't just good advice; it's something to faithfully live by. Yes, you can have a donut, but don't have one everyday for breakfast. It's fine to drink coffee, but make sure it's decaf or that you're not drinking it everyday. Remember the age-old saying, "Eat to live, don't live to eat"? Well, that's "food in moderation" in disguise. You won't need to live by the Atkins diet or some such other "healthy" regime if you just make sure that you're getting sufficient, and healthful, portions.
4. Take the stairs.
So you're at work and you're waiting for that darned elevator to make its way down twenty floors. Don't wait for it; but that doesn't also mean you should walk up twenty flights of stairs everyday. Walk up just four
