My husband and I resisted buying cell phones for the longest time. We never needed to call anyone bad enough that it couldn't wait until we got home, and the few times that someone needed to call us while we were out didn't motivate us to take on the additional cost. Then I began taking the bus to work, and the need for me to be able to contact others from anywhere prompted us to finally purchase cellular phones and services. As new as we were to the world of cell phones, we did our research both on-line and with our friends and family, and came to the conclusion that Verizon Wireless was the best provider in our area.
Initially we researched on the Internet and Consumer Reports and learned that Verizon was on par with other providers on cost, features, and available phones, but for our area it had the clearest sound and the fewest dropped calls. Asking around we heard dozens of horror stories about other providers ranging from terrible customer service to outrageous roaming fees. At the time we only knew a few people who had Verizon and they all seemed perfectly happy with their service.
The next step was a visit to the dreaded cellular store. We expected to be pounced on by overly aggressive sales people, but the sales staff we met were very kind and respectful. They were knowledgeable about all the phones and didn't tell us anything that we hadn't already verified on Consumer Reports. They listened to us and didn't try to pressure us into buying anything more then exactly what we wanted. We purchased a highly ranked LG phone at a discount and a second phone for free. They offered to waive the set-up fee as long as we purchased a minimum two-year contract and after some debate we agreed to the plan. With the minimum 500 minute plan and an extra $9.99 per month we pay a reasonable amount. Our plan also includes text messaging and in-network calls are free, which is great since we primarily use our phones to talk to each other.
Having experienced bad reception and dropped calls from our friends and relatives we were prepared for the worst, but pleasantly surprised when we experienced neither with our phones. In four years with Verizon, neither of us have ever had a dropped call, while our acquaintances with other providers complain about them constantly. Service is great no matter where we are in our area, except extremely rural areas which have no cellular service no matter who the provider is. When my husband travels out of state on business we
