Don't sew? Don't worry! Do you get tired of your child going as a monster, fairy, witch or Dracula every year? That's about all is available at the department stores in bought costumes for them. Here's a simple kid's costume that either boys or girls can wear and is easily made in one afternoon. It's the cutest little bumblebee!
Items you will need:
A bright yellow t-shirt much too big for your child- An adult's t-shirt works best.
A Black permanent ink wide tip Magic Marker type pen
A pencil
A girl's plastic headband- preferably solid black
2 black pipe cleaners
Black thread
A needle
2 yellow pom poms about the size of a quarter
A package of elastic about 1/4 inch wide
2 safety pins
A yard stick
A pair of scissors
A piece of flat heavy cardboard or an old magazine
Quilt batting or something to use to stuff the shirt.
A pair of black tights
A pair of black tennis shoes for your child
1. Begin by laying the yellow t-shirt across an ironing board or on a table. It must be on a flat surface and easy to reach. Take the yard stick as a marker and begin drawing with a pencil places to put the black stripes of the bumblebee across the yellow shirt. Do not forget to also lay the stripes across the back side of the shirt and try to stay even with the front stripes when you lay them out.
2. Next fill in the stripes by using the permanent ink Black felt tip marker. You'll need to place heavy cardboard or something between the two sides of the shirt to avoid bleed through of the black marker on places on the other side of the t-shirt you didn't want it to be. Take care while filling in the stripes that you're staying within the marks you laid off to keep the stripes fairly consistent across the shirt.
These first two steps are the most time consuming part of making this costume.
3. Once the stripes have been put on the front and back of the shirt take a pair of scissors and cut one small slit into the inside bottom hem of the t-shirt.
4. Next take the elastic from the package and put a safety pin in the end of the elastic.
5. Begin threading the elastic through the slit in the hem, pushing the elastic a little farther each time by holding the safety pin and gathering the material and pushing the safety pin. Repeat until you have ran the elastic all the way through the hem of the t-shirt and have excess elastic sticking out from both ends of the slit in the hem of the t-shirt.
6. At this point, undo the safety pin you used to
