Whether or not the Buffalo Bills are successful in 2008 will depend very heavily on the QB play. In 2007, both quarterbacks (JP Losman and Trent Edwards) were very inconsistent, making it hard for the Bills to sustain any type of consistency movement of the ball, which is what led them to having a mediocre season.
Going into 2008, it appears that 2nd year man Trent Edwards will be the starting quarterback. As a rookie in 2007, Edwards showed a lot of poise, making the Bills very hopeful about his future. He did struggle like all rookie quarterbacks do, but he showed a lot of good things to showcase some of his potential. He completed about 56% of his passes, throwing 7 TD along with 8 INT. He threw for over 1600 yards, with about 6 YPA. These numbers certainly are not eye-popping, but they are very solid for a rookie QB in the NFL.
The other competitor is JP Losman. Losman is a former first-round pick that has gotten a lot of chances for the Bills, but just doesn't seem to have ever taken the next step. In 2007, he threw for 1204 yards, with 4 TD and 6 INT. He completed over 63% of his passes with 6.88 YPA. He also showed a little bit of elusiveness and athleticism, running for over 100 yards in limited time.
If they can get consistent QB play, but they have some weapons at the skill positions. First round pick Marshawn Lynch was the 2nd best rookie RB in the NFL (behind Adrian Peterson), showing he can be a very productive back in the League. Despite battling some injuries, he rushed for 1115 yards on 4.0 YPC, and also had 7 TD. At wideout, the talented guy is Lee Evans, whose numbers were down a bit this year with the QB play. He still finished with 55 catches for 849 yards and 5 TD, but he has the talent to do what he did 2 years ago, which was to finish with 82 grabs for 1292 yards and 8 TD.
In the division, obviously the Bills are competing against the mighty New England Patriots, who should be very good once again in 2008. Beyond that, the teams are not all that tough, with the Miami Dolphins and New York Jets looking to hold down the rear of the division again.
2008 has a chance to be a good year for the Buffalo Bills if they can get some productive, consistent QB play. They have good skill players, and aside from New England, a relatively easy division. There's a solid chance we could see a return to the postseason for the Buffalo Bills in 2008.
