So you're buying a new car huh?
In all of the thought, research and decision-making that goes in to purchasing a new car it is often so easy to forget about that old one that's still sitting in the driveway. Whatever the reason for you buying your new car, that old clunker you're currently driving might be more valuable than you think. Unfortunately, so many car buyers find themselves entrenched in the overall experience of new car shopping that old faithful gets placed on the back burner, all but forgotten until the big day when it realizes that its' life long dedication of service to the owner is no longer needed.
Trade-in values can fluctuate immensely when dealing with car dealerships. So much so that it can become a negative experience when you discover that you are selling off years of memories for just a few hundred bucks. Ultimately, dealerships are not interested in giving you fair market price for your vehicle and often use trade-ins as an opportunity to widen their overall profit margins as holistically dealerships realize higher profits in used car sales vs. their shinier new car counterparts.
That said there are a number of things that you can do to maximize the money that you get for your trade-in before you approach the dealership on contract signing day. Following these simple steps will guarantee you top dollar for trade-in and an overall better new car buying experience.
1) First Impressions are EVERYTHING! Make sure to give your old friend a new shine by scrubbing and detailing the exterior. Removing bugs from the bumper, dirt from the pits of dents and dings and giving the wheels and tires some extra special attention will make the car's curb appeal irresistible. If you want to go the extra mile, a fine buffer and wax will add that extra shine on sunny days and if you don't feel like doing it on your own, a visit to a local detail shop should get 'er done for under $100.
Now since you've got the outside poppin', it's time to give the inside a quick look. A good vacuum under the seats to remove loose debris, a nice shampoo job on the cushions and some polish for the dash, doors and rear vinyl areas is in order. This should give the inside as much spark as the outside and increase the overall value of the automobile. Floor mats are also a great addition, especially if the floor carpet is worn.
