One of the best tips I know is remembering to give your therapist honest, constructive feedback.
It's very easy to get involved in a side issue which can take time away from what may be more important for you. If you think this is happening, tell your therapist as soon as possible.
Don't be afraid to let your therapist know if their handle on things isn't quite right. Just try different ways of presenting it until it's clearer. This is part of the therapeutic process.
If you feel uneasy about a particular subject or have mixed feelings about being in therapy, voice this to your therapist. These feelings are also a part of the therapeutic picture and it can be useful to work through them first.
If you experience something unusual or uncomfortable while you're speaking, describe it to your therapist. If you have a sudden insight or idea, share it while it's still fresh in your mind.
If something in a session didn't sit right with you, let your therapist know. But also try to pinpoint what made you uneasy and, if possible, what you would have liked to see instead. Also feedback when you find something especially helpful, and if there's anything you'd like to do more of.
Jot things down over the week that you'd like to bring up or try out in your next meeting so you won't forget once you're there.
And finally, be sure to reflect on what you've taken from sessions throughout the week and note how the suggestions, techniques or insights work in real life. You will definitely get more out of therapy if you find ways to carry the work foreword yourself between meetings.
