Reflections: Job seeking as a mature, overqualified adult

Looking for a job in your late fifties is a bit daunting. I know because I am on the long forgotten road of interviewing. After twenty years in the same place, I was outsourced, a phrase I have come to believe means fired. Also known as canned, pink slipped or your services are no longer needed. Regardless of the term it means you are no longer gainfully employed.

Due in part to the economy I must find a job. The fact is I like to eat, not to mention sleep in my own house in my own bed. Therefore I need to continue paying on a mortgage I have donated to for the past twenty-three years. In seven years the old homestead will be mine. Hopefully I will be able to enjoy it's serenity until then.

Putting together a resume' spanning twenty years is somewhat of a challenge. It is difficult to convey the experience gained in a few short lines. It is even more difficult to list what one does in a day at work. Each day required the menial tasks, and each day presented new challenges. I enjoyed my job, and looked forward to going to work each day, well okay most days.

Non the less having complied my resume' lauding my talents, I mailed off two a week ago. Neither which bore any fruit for my labor. Monday I mailed off another one for a job which I have limited knowledge. Tuesday I received a call to set up an interview on Friday. I have extensive computer knowledge, perhaps that perked their interest up a bit.

I do know that this once confident worker in the business world is somewhat unsettled about the actual interview. First, I am worried that the person questioning my skills will be twenty years or more younger than me. I can see him now, tilted back in a rich leather made chair with his college diploma on a shelf above his head. I did not go to college I had to work my way up through trial and error. I evidently did well, at least my paycheck each month spoke of success. Secondly, with the work force becoming more casual in dress and mannerism, will I be construed as old fashion if I wear a dress versus the pant suit.

I realize both issues sound a little petty, but remember I have not had to "sell my self" so to speak in twenty years. It is a bit daunting, yet there is a up side to it. I am way past puberty so I don't have to worry that my face will break out with pimples brought on by stress. I also know how to correctly fill out tax deduction forms and insurance forms.

Like a kid at Christmas, I wish Friday was here. You know, I think I will wear pants and a sweater. I am meeting friends for a drink after they get off work, might as well be comfortable. Ah yes, is that the decision of a woman alluding confidence I hear?
