Thoughts on the fashion trends of today

by Lulu

The scariest fashion trend of today is the one that has little girls looking like adults.

I am petite and have had to buy clothes in the 'kiddies department' for years. This always presented a problem because many of the clothes were simply not appropriate as adult wear. In the last two to three years this has changed, I now find clothing in the children's department that is not only suitable as adult wear, but indistinguishable from adult wear.

I work for a store that sells school uniforms, obviously I get to see lots of little girls. There is nothing quite as jarring to the senses as seeing an eight year old girl wearing a rather seductive looking outfit that you would expect to see on an eighteen year old.

It is understandable that little girls want to look all grown-up, or want to dress like mommy; I used to want that but luckily enough the clothing was more modest and where it was immodest, there were no matching children's versions.

Many of the shirts are cut to the style that in an adult would accentuate the cleavage area except that on a child there is no cleavage, but the style of clothing still brings the idea of cleavage to mind. Then we have the low rise hipster trousers, which I think are fortunately starting to go out of style. I was under the impression that we, as adults, wore these low rise trousers because they were considered sexy, they bring attention to our hips and anatomy lower than the stomach. For what reason would an eight year old wear such a thing? Why would the clothing industry be creating this style of clothing for children?!

My next gripe is with the shoes. Not only do we have children's versions of our, not so modest, adult clothing, we have now given them child size versions of adult footwear to finish off the 'all-grown-up' look. I have always heard that high heels are bad for a woman's back. Then we surely should not be designing shoes with heels that are sometimes over 5cm high for children, their bones are still developing and if the heels are not healthy for a grown woman whose bone structure and spine are fully formed then they definitely cannot be healthy for a child.

I do not have children, but when I see my nine year old niece walking around gracefully on her over 5cm high platforms with her midriff showing, I want to grab the nearest blanket, wrap her up in it, and then lecture my brother about the dangers of pedophiles.
