MLB predictions: 2008 Boston Red Sox

Predictions? Are your crazy. Everyone knows that Red Sox fans don't make predictions. Instead we spend every aching minute after every single game changing what ever minuscule prediction we may have inadvertently allowed in to our head. If Drew goes 4 for 5 with a home run and 5 RBI he must be the second coming of Teddy Ballgame, Right? If Francona leaves Timlin to face that one extra batter and he gets a run scoring double they both must be on the Yankee pay roll, right? The point is I have never met a Sox fan who has made a prediction on the teams success or lack their off, and not changed it almost game by game. Its the nature of the best with Sox fans. Its a neurosis that cant be explained. Do we enjoy the thrill? Are we commit-a-phob's? Are we just simply screwed up from being neglected by our surrogate parents for 86 years? Who knows. Just don't expect to hear anyone who is truly a Red Sox fan offer a prediction that hasn't changed by the end of the next game at least once. It wont happen. We are the "shift on the fly" fans. The "I know where there is greener grass" fans. Don't get me wrong this is not all just good case study fodder for The New England Journal of medicine...it puts us in a unique place that very few, and I mean very few, sports fans have ever been. The Edge. We have been to the edge and the sights have been gruesome (see 67, 78,86 03) but we also have been to that very same edge and seen nirvana. Some fans get to see one or the other in their lifetimes. Very few will ever see both. I can think of only one right now that fits the bill. The Chicago Cubs. If/when the Cubbies ever win the big one watch the change in the fans spirit & soul. They will never again be the same. Its like living through a near death experience over and over and over again then waking up having won the lottery, married a model, earned your masters through osmosis and figured out how to set your VCR clock all at the same time. It is magical. We don't make predictions for our Red Sox. We live the for our Red Sox. Usually that means living a 6 month roller coaster ride. You will have hundreds of ups. You'll have hundreds of downs. We sit right there through it all praying that the last stop the coaster makes is right at the top. Right at the edge.
