HABITAT: Asia and Europe. Widely distributed worldwide common weed abundant in meadows, even above elevations of 10,000 feet. Likes an alkaline soil of grassy open places, fields and waste areas. In cities, it is found everywhere, even in the cracks of roads and sidewalks. Found almost anywhere in all parts of North America, particularly on lawns. It is now a common plant throughout the world.

DESCRIPTION: Plant of the Sun, (Leo), symbolized by the lion. The dandelion is a sun emblem governing the sign of Leo and assigned to the planet Venus. It is the birthday flower for 27 September, symbolic of grief, bitterness and coquetry. As a bitter herb, it is a symbol of Christ's Passion. The generic name is a corruption of a Persian word meaning bitter pot-herb. It comes from Middle English Dent de lyoun from French dent de lion, lion's tooth - an illusion to the jagged, toothlike edges of the leaves. Erect, hairy stem is not branched and has leaves all the way to the top. The flowers occur on a terminal spike, yellow-white with purple markings. The fruits are pods, very fuzzy and 2 inches long.
Common weed with yellow flowers and long taproots with fresh parts exuding a milky juice when cut or broken. Stems are very short, leaves all clustered at ground level. Leaves are 3-5 inches long and lobed in from their sides. Leafless flower stalks are hollow in the center, varying in height depending on where the plant grows and the age of the flower that is usually 2-15 inches tall. Flowers are crowded in a head one to a stalk and are yellow colored. The head when opened are 1/2 to 2 inches wide. Fruits are small seedlike pale gray to olive green in color, each one with a parachute of hairs at the top. Name originated from the French "dent de lion" tooth of the lion, referring to the plants jagged toothed leaves. Plant 6 inches apart in rows 12 inches apart in midsummer or early fall. Mulch before freezing temperatures arrives with straw. Seeds have been carried from place to place for cultivation. Leaves grow in a rosette from a long taproot.
