Geraldine Farraro made a grave error. She completley failed to consider Al Sharpton, Jesse Jackson, and myriad other black Americans who aspired to political office, without success. She failed to see the very solid, multi-faceted base of Mr. Obama's popularity. Her lapse in judgement (like any other white American, who dares to broach the issue of race with anything other than flagrant apologism.), cost her her job, her credibility, and called into quetion her most basic values. But wait a minute; before we dismiss her comment as ignorant, or immoral, shouldn't we try to understand the context in which it was uttered? Most say no. Most don't need to think too hard on Mrs. Farraro's views to see them as flawed. However, those same people who consider the Ferraro issue an open and shut case, are now bending over backwards, stretching logic to it's very limits, in an effort to try to understand Rev. Wright's words. How does a black pastor make gospel "relavent" to black Americans? By shouting "Goddamn America!.....The United Sstates of White America"? By accusing the white man of inventing HIV, in some Dan Brownesque conspiracy of genocide? Sorry, folks, but I fail to see any logical connection to lies and racial condemnation, and the gospel. There should be no "prism" from which to view such nonsense. In order to follow the teachings of Christ,(or just basic human decency, for you secular types), empowerment of one race, and condemnation of another MUST be mutualy exclusive. In other words: "Mr. Wright, don't try to raise your people up, by putting another people down".Dr. King taught us that. Dr. King empowered his people, and changed the world with a doctrine of compassion, mercy, and dignity for ALL men. THAT, is how one makes gospel relavent. Not by hate and reactionism. Make no mistake, there is no way to rationalize or explain away Rev. Wrights comments, Mr. Obama's (and a guilt-ridden, agenda driven media by proxy), in a reasonable context. If Rev. Wright was a white man, shouting "Godamn America! The United States of Black America!" What would we call him? A RACIST. If a white political candidate was personaly involved, over a number of years, with a member of the clegy who used the pulpit to insult and falsely accuse black America of attempted genocide, would he have even a shred of popular support after the story broke? Has racism become an exclusivly white phonomena? That smacks of segregation and sepratism. That is racist. That is immoral. I assure you, this is not the first time the reverend made such comments. Mr. Obama sat in a pew, for years and listened to such sermons....and did nothing.
I am an average white man. I am not privy to any racial conspiracy. I've earned everythingg I have through hard work and personal effort, not white entitlement. I don't believe black men are "powerless against the tentacles of white power." I believe millions of black men and women succed in this nation every day by utilizing the principals of hard work and effort i previously mentioned. I hope we as a nation can focus on that truth, and avoid the dangerous, potentialy violent pitfalls of justifying hatred and reactionism, justified or not. There is no prism through which to view hate, black or white. Please stop enabling intolerance.
