I definitely exhibit the personality that enjoys giving, rather than receiving when gifts come to mind. There have been many situations, where I have simply told the people whom are asking what I would like to receive; that I would much rather them get themselves something that is needed. I gain far more joy in knowing that a loved one, or a friend enjoys what I have chosen for them; than gaining a materialistic item for myself. However, that is not to say that I do not enjoy getting gifts, quite on the contrary. Anything that has been hand made from a close friend, my husband, or my daughter is held near and dear to my heart; something that holds a far greater sentimental value than monetary value in my day to day life.
There have been times in my life, when purchasing a gift wasn't an option, so I would spend hours upon hours creating beautiful works of art to give to my friends. I would take into consideration their likes, and dislikes on a daily basis; and try to combine it into something that they were sure to enjoy. Seeing their expressions, and their thank you's full of heart felt gratitude warmed my soul to the core. This allowed me not only to give something to them, but gain the pride in knowing that I have shown my friends and family how I feel about them. That they matter in my life, and that I could not see my being without them.
At one point, we were fairly well off (this of course being this last year) during the holiday season. While a close friend of mine was met with many struggles, the first being a nasty divorce; along with a custody battle of her sweet son. It was quite evident that her son would not be able to have the Christmas that every child deserves. So with this in mind, and asking her permission; we were able to obtain enough heart felt items to fulfill his Christmas. Although we did not obtain many toys, my husband, daughter, and I were able to get his necessities such as clothing and shoes taken care of. To see both his happy expression upon obtaining the gifts, and her eyes welling with tears of gratitude; I was sure I was seeing the true meaning of the holiday season.
