Easy weight loss: A personal plan to get in shape - and stay in shape

Okay, let's get real. You've been on diets before, and you've probably even lost a few pounds, only to gain them back again. Right? Well, here's a healthier way to lose weight that's easy and that you will be able to stick with for the rest of your life. Follow these seven steps to getting and staying in shape:

Step One: Buy a Scale

This was the step that I threw out or avoided, but I realized it was the most important step. To change your body, you need to know where you stand. A recent study at Brown University Medical School showed that daily weigh- ins are key. Maybe this is the reason why Weight Watchers is so successful; participants know that they will have to weigh in weekly. The first thing in the morning at the same time is the best and most accurate way to keep tabs on your success. Use this number to track your progress. A realistic goal is one to two pounds a week.

Step Two: Start an Exercise Plan

You knew you weren't going to get off that easy, did you? Remember the rule: You have to burn more calories than you take in. The fastest way to do that is to eat less and exercise more. Besides burning calories, exercise builds muscle and boosts your metabolism. One of the best things you can do is walk. Invest in a pedometer and aim for 10,000 steps a day. If you want to lose more weight, increase your steps. You'll be amazed how quickly they add up. Always park at the furthest parking space and go up and down the stairs twice when you have to turn out the light in the upstairs' bedroom. A little extra effort goes a long way. If you find that you're minus your 10,000 steps a day, then take an extra long walk at the end of the day. The more steps, the more you will see the pounds melt off. Let the pedometer numbers rise and the scale numbers fall.

Step Three: Tell Everyone

I know you may have not want to hear this one, but accountability is crucial. Sit your family down and tell them your goals. Be clear and let them know how much this means to you and how you would appreciate their support and help. A weight loss buddy can also improve your chances of success, unless she's the type that likes to have a Venti Mocha Latte after her morning walk! If you don't know of anyone who can be your support buddy, consider joining an online group. There are many to choose from, including Weight Watchers.

Step Four: Clean Out the Cupboards
