I was homeschooled for all of high school and my brother and sister were homeschooled from elementary school on. My top ten list comes from experience and not just what I think goes on.
1) Sleep in. You always hear talk about how kids don't get enough rest. Not enough sleep to concentrate in school and pass their tests. We always got to sleep in every day. We got plenty of rest for our days of work.
2) Personalized curriculum. We were able to have a more personalize curriculum to suit our needs, learning disciplines and what our parents approved of. For example: I wanted to learn French but the regular schools didn't teach that. I was able to learn it through homeschooled without it being an extra outside of school type class. My mother wanted us to have religious studies that were not offered in the schools so were allowed Bible as a form of education and one year we were all taught Consumer Math as a course.
3) Field Trips. Gotta love field trips. Now-a-days schools are getting further and further away from field trips. In fact in an entire education of a child they may only go on one or two field trips in that time. We were able to visit places and experience outside of the "classroom". We went to city commission meetings when we studied government. We went to the art museum when we studied history. Field trips bring what you read to life. It makes it real.
4) One on one personalized attention. Instead of being a number or a name in my teachers ledger (I did go to public school up through the 8th grade), I got one-on-one attention. If I had a question or needed help my mother or father were there to spend as much time as needed to explain, show me, give me examples until I understood.
5) No cafeteria food. I got moms home cooking every morning noon and night. That one big reason to be a homeschooler; NO MYSTERY MEAT!
6) Flexible schedule. As mentioned previously I got to sleep in but I was also able to take breaks if I needed. I did "P.E." I had a schedule of sorts. I worked out with a program on ESPN everyday and we had a pool and I rode my bike every day. If I had something I wanted to do the next day or somewhere I wanted to go I could do extra work and have a day off or skip the day and do double the work . So I could work at my own pace within reason.
7) Quality time with the family. Having my mother as my "teacher" and my siblings working by my side was nice. We seemed closer as a family and even to this day we're a very tight knit family. So far two of us
