A guide to music colleges in California

When looking at all of the colleges and Universities in California there are many that offer good programs in music. It will depend on what degree you are wanting and what you want to do with it. If you want to teach music you may be able to go to just about any university in California. San Francisco is one of the best cities in the country to receive education in the arts in any format. If you are looking for a great music college or University then California is one of the better states to find what you are looking for.

California State University of Northridge is one of the best Universities to look into when you want to major in music. This is a four year public University and is located in the San Fernando Valley. It was established back in 1958. Their music program is among the top 25 of accredited Universities. They offer various programs in music such as Music Therapy, Music Industry, Music Performance, and Jazz studies.

University of California in Berkeley is located in Berkeley, California. Many times people simply refer to it as Berkeley. It is one of the oldest campuses affiliated with the University of California. They hold awards in their A Cappella groups. The California Golden Overtones is an all female A Cappella group that has earned a second place in the International Championship of Collegiate A Cappella in 2001. The all men's A Cappella is called the UC Men's Octet and has eight members. This group was first created in 1948. They won awards in the ICCA in 1998 and 2000. UCLA offers various programs in Music such as Music History and in Performance. They also have a music partnership program that they started several years ago in order to help other schools that have lacked funding for their music programs.

The California Institute of the Arts is located in Valencia which is right outside of LA. It is best known as simply CalArts. This school was created by Walt Disney in the late 60's. This is where students are allowed to create their own work where they can keep control of their own copyrights. There are various degrees available in fine arts, graphic design, and photography and media, but mostly the music degrees are musical arts, world music, and music technology to name a few.

There are various Universities in the arts located in San Francisco which happens to be one of the best cities in the United States to study various forms of art. San Francisco Conservatory of Music combines performing and studying. There are only 375 students which gives a more intimate feel between student and instructor.

The School of Music and Dance of San Francisco State University allows professional musicians to interact with amateurs for better learning. The University offers degrees in electronic music, composition, music history, education, classical and jazz performance.

There are more Universities and colleges that offer great music programs in California. It will depend on what your interests are and where you live in order to select which school you prefer to go to. All of the Universities mentioned above are some of the best schools to look into.
