I would suggest there are many ways of looking at a good website.
First of all the presentation of the website, does it look clear, and well presented? Does it look like a glossy magazine, a business website? The first impressions are key to success of any website. Getting the presentation wrong on the home landing page will spell disaster and make any on line customer look away. The design and presentation of the website must be related to the field that a on line company wants to operate in. If it is a entertainment site, it should look appealing to the eye, well organised, the content should be relevant and up to date for the consumer that is being targeted. Business news sites are focused on by making the landing page, look formal, tidy, neat, full of new news articles. The accuracy of the news.
Ease of navigation, colours, fonts, are all crucial factors in putting a good website together. Online business news surfers would not be enticed into a poor colour scheme, too many or inappropriate use of fonts.
Also if using a website for transaction processing of goods or services, there must be a website Internet standards of safety and security. Customers tend not to purchase regularly from unsafe websites or where they feel there on line security and card payment details might be intercepted by the Internet criminal.
Usability of the site, it is not good if the user in navigating to a different section of the site, discovers there is no content displayed, and will result in the on line viewer moving to another site, or turning off the computer. On line users need to have something extra to entice them to view the site on a repeat basis. The usability covers, the update of products, services, news. Of course the more content and the more usage that the website holds will generate more surfers to the site.
The use of animations, media players, content again the website design must be adapted to the needs of the group of surfers the online website owners want to attract. Use of photo's adds that extra touch of allowing the surfer to see the relevant images of interest.
Choice of flash or HTML text based websites also helps as the design, look and feel of a website caters for different groups of people. A well designed flash site appeals more to a more sophisticated type of surfer, whereas the normal text based HTML might prove better with more focused use of traditional Internet browsing. So accommodating different formats of website helps to draw in more variety of people, and in turn makes it more appealing overall to view that site.
Also search engine listing, if a website is maintained and successful it will tend to have a higher Google page ranking. Word of mouth recommendations also will help determine a good website.
