In another article I wrote, The Democrats Want Women to Wait, I wrote about members of the Democratic Party who want Senator Clinton to stand aside so that in essence the male candidate, Senator Obama, could start running before the convention just as Senator McCain is doing for the Republican Party. Historically our nation hasn't made many changes after a different type of candidate is elected President.
Let's be realistic. In modern time the only different man has been John F. Kennedy whose religion drew much attention, criticism, fear and pride. As a Roman Catholic, President Kennedy was the first non-Protestant candidate to win. Many feared a Catholic President would put us under the rule of the Pope. Many Roman Catholics took great that one of their number could be President. President Kennedy was supposed to bring change to this nation, a new voice. The media loved him and his wife and the White House was renamed Camelot. That was nearly 50 years ago. In those days there was a great deal of animosity between religions and this nation's government was predominately White Anglo Saxon Protestant. While representatives come from a glorious variety of race, religion and nationality it seems our nation as a whole has not evolved from the mindset that our President must be a reflection of our founding fathers.
Senators Obama and Clinton both represent a physical, cultural change as well in their campaigns. But Senator Obama is the son of a White Anglo Saxon Protestant Mother who's father happened to come from Kenya. He is ivy league educated. He is a church going (Protestant) married man with two children. His half sister is a half Indonesian and married to a Chinese Canadian. He is a best selling author. Having absolutely nothing to do with qualifications, he's like a Madison Avenue version of a Presidential Candidate. Senator Obama is absolutely what this country is about. Raised by a single mom and a grandmother he represents the American dream - to go to college, to have a good job, to have a family and a good home and to run for President. Will having another man with a minority aspect make a difference to the nation's future overall. That frankly depends on if President Obama can make enough changes in 4 or 8 years to change the mindset of the nation.
Senator Clinton is also a White Anglo Saxon Protestant just like the our Founding Fathers. But as a woman she is as different as can possibly be accepted by our nation at
