How to report human rights violations

by Melissa Myrick

Created on: April 14, 2008

The United Nation strives to make the process of reporting human rights violations easier, as well as faster. In 1994 the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights established a 24-hour a day hotline, which allows the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights in Geneva to be able to monitor and quickly react to any human rights emergencies that happen around the world. The hotline (41-22-917-0092) is a fax line, which is available to any victim of a human rights violation, as well as their relative and non-government organizations.

There has also been a human rights database created to keep those who patrol human rights violations up to date. The goal of the database and the hotline are to have timely information on human rights violations, including all life-saving and urgent information.

The UN has various reporteurs around the world in charge of overseeing human rights issues, making reports when violations occur, and also implementing policies to stem any violations. In order to to the desired result of a claim or violation, it is crucial to verify all information in a report. Incorrect information will delay, or possibly cancel out a reported violation.

Wars of aggression, war crimes and crimes against humanity, including genocide, are breaches of International humanitarian law and represent the most serious of human rights violations. This is not to say that these are the only violations that can be reported. These are simply the most crucial of all violations, and examples of the ones that will be dealt with in an immediate fashion. Those violations that are of lessor importance will be dealt with after the major violations have been looked into and dealt with.

There are currently more human rights that are in the process of being added. The new areas that may be covered, and are currently being debated are environmental , fetal rights as well as future rights, and what might change in the future. The world as a whole mainly agrees that we are in need of rights to protect our environment, and the world over debats fetal rigts, which could have a major impact on current abortion laws and regulations.
