Unforgettable 70s sci-fi TV shows

to still be one of the best science fiction shows of all time, but due to its incredibly high budget it was canceled. Of course, if you tune into the Sci Fi Channel you can find a modern incarnation that is getting even more raves.

Buck Rogers in the 25th Century (1979-1981)
No other show helped to capture the true essence of the 70s than Buck Rogers. In the year 1987 Captain Rogers was sent on a deep space mission, but was frozen only to return to an Earth that was ravaged by almost completely devastating wars. He finds himself a little out of touch, but is soon re-integrated into society and works for the Earth now, defending it from all too many alien (and sometimes domestic) threats. The plots were amusing enough, but the fashions were incredible. For some reason, tight fitting outfits and gold lame were all the rage in the 25th Century (not unlike the disco scene) and Buck's introduction of what was supposed to be late 80s music into the culture of the time was scary, at best. These people honestly thought that disco would still be around a decade later. Thankfully, this show has not been re-made.

Doctor Who (The whole decade!)
This was probably the most successful time for this incredible show. The show was finally starting to get some great plotlines and The Doctor was finally coming into his own as a notable science fiction hero in the U.S. Despite the fact that three different actors played The Doctor during this decade, everyone remembers Tom Baker the most. He was the guy with the hat, long coat, and the 25 foot long multi-colored scarf. Along with some great episodes that spanned seven or more parts, the crowning glory was a whole entire year dedicated to "The Key to Time" where The Doctor and his companion, Ramana searched all over space and time for the parts of a key that would basically unlock the secrets of, well, everything. Some still hold this as the best series of the show (including present-day ones). Needless to say, this show would stay around until 1989 and would have an incredible renaissance in 2005.

The 60s laid the groundwork and the 80s showed a slight decline, but it's easy to see that if you wanted a nice dose of cheesy programming, the 70s was the Golden Age for science fiction on television.
