Choosing cereal brands does not have to be a hard thing. There are plenty of ways you could choose the healthier cereals with more vitamins and minerals that you will benefit from. From now on, your habits of buying sugary and unhealthy cereals like Trix, Frosted Flakes, and Cocoa Krispies will be a thing of the past.
To begin with, you must check the fiber content of the cereal. It should have at least three grams of fiber in each serving size. This proves that it is made from whole wheat, not enriched flour. To prove this, the first word in the ingredients list will say whole wheat flour instead of enriched or bleached/unbleached flour. Whole wheat is the better source of fiber, and it also stabilizes blood sugar levels more than enriched flour.
Secondly, you should check the grams of sugar on the nutrition label. If it has more than six grams of sugar, you must keep looking for another cereal. It is all right to have some sugar is healthy cereal, but an excess amount means sugar has been added; and it is not natural sugars from the whole wheat. Any kind of added sugar will definitely cause you to gain weight, or maintain your weight if you are trying to lose.
Many people do not do this, but I check the percent of iron I would get in each serving, and if it equals more than forty percent, it is an excellent source of iron. iron is a daily essential vitamin that we all need. Cheerios is great because it has forty-five percent, and Total flakes have one-hundred percent iron in each serving. Having the minimal amount of iron needed each day could prevent such illnesses as anemia, and also keeps your immune system strong.
Obviously, the calorie count is an important part also. Chances are if the fiber content is high, and the amount of sugar is low, the calorie count will be pretty reasonable as well. You also have to take into account the amount of milk you will be having with the cereal. On every single nutrition label, the number of calories with the milk added n is generally shown for each serving, so you do not have to worry about having a guide.
As far as brands go, each of them offers some healthy cereals, so there is no reason to worry about quality. General Mills has Cheerios and Total, Quaker has the granola and raisins cereal, Post has shredded wheat, and lots of variety of fruit and flake combinations.
Now that you know how to look for healthy cereals, you could go right to them in the store, and bypass all the sugary, low-fiber cereals you were eating before. After doing this, you will see that you feel much better and healthier as your day goes on.
