I think the best NBA trio ever assembled is easily Bill Russell, Sam Jones and John "Hondo" Havlicek. Name three other players that won six NBA titles in seven seasons. Sam Jones actually led the Celtics in scoring for several of those seasons with Hondo right behind him.
The second trio would be the frontline of Robert Parrish, Kevin McHale and Larry Bird. These three are credited with making the NBA what it is today along with the help of Magic, Kareem and James Worthy of the Los Angeles Lakers who provided the opposition in the greatest rivalry ever. All three were voted one of the 50 top players of all time. Bird is the greatest small forward of all time and one of the NBA's best clutch shooters. Parrish played over 20 years and was the oldest player to ever play in a NBA game,he was both consistent and outstanding. Mchale was versatile and had the best post moves of any one to play the game.
With that said, I would put Magic, Kareem and Worthy third on the list. All three were voted one of the 50 tops players of all time. Magic is the top point guard of all time, third in career assist and the most revolutionary player of any era. James Worthy is arguably one of the top finishers on the fast break. He also earned his nickname Big Game James because of clutch shooting and dominance in the playoffs. Kareem is the all time leading scorer in the NBA. This Laker trio won four championships together.
In fourth place I will have to go with Michael Jordan, Scotty Pippen and Dennis Rodman. In reality this was the greatest player ever teamed with two players that found themselves on the right team. Jordan made both of these players much better than they really were. If Rodman could have kept his head on straight he may have earned more respect and had more rebounds. The first part of his career was pretty unspectacular with the Detroit Pistons.
In fifth place, Wilt Chamberlain, Elgin Baylor and Jerry West win the prize, although they didn't win a ring together nobody can argue that they are among the best trio ever. The reason they never won a ring was because of the great Celtic teams. Although they couldn't get it done as a team, which is how everything is measured they were quite the collection.
That is the all-time greatest NBA trios at this point in history. The San Antonio Spurs may bump into the top five with another ring or two. They have Tim Duncan, Mano Ginobili, Tony Parker who have already produced 3 rings for the Spurs. Duncan has already secured his spot as one of the top players of all-time. Mano and Tony have to prove a little more before jumping on a list with the likes of those listed above.
