Is music at work calming or distracting?
They say that music calms the savage beast. Well I must be a savage beast, because in my opinion, that statement is very true. I have always found that listening to music while I worked, made the work go faster and easier than working in silence. I find that my brain just does not want to work when I am sitting at my desk and there is not a sound in the background. I NEED noise to be able to work to the best of my ability, quietness is what is distracting, at least for me, I'm sure there are others that will beg to differ with that statement, some people need the silence around them so they can work to the best of their ability.
I find myself desk dancing when I hear a good tune on the radio. For those of you that does not know what desk dancing is, I will tell you. While sitting at your desk you hear a snappy tune coming out of the radio behind you, move your feet to the beat of the music and sway the upper parts of your body, you are desk dancing. This also gives your muscles a workout so that you are not as stiff as you would be just sitting there writing or typing on your computer, be careful though, you may make a mistake or two if your fingers decide to dance across your keyboard in time with the rhythm.
I have always loved country and western music; I can pop in a Randy Travis or Travis Tritt, Conway Twitty, George Straight, etc. or my most very favorite of all, Elvis Presley. I can work for hours on end as long as I can listen to the beat of these songs coming across the airwaves of my radio or stereo.
If you work with the public like I did, you will know what it's like to deal with a hundred different personalities in one day. My nerves would fly into high gear trying to deal with some of the harder customers. Believe it or not, there are some people out there that can frazzle your last nerve even though you are doing your best trying to please them. They do not care for your feelings as long as they get exactly what they want, when they want it.
I found that by taking a step back, closing my eyes, taking a deep breath, and listening to the rhythm of one of my favorite songs, would calm be down enough to allow me to go back to the counter and deal with yet another, difficult customer, while trying my hardest to keep a smile on my face and say "yes sir" or "yes mam." Music helps me to keep my sanity while I am at the workplace or any other place I like to listen to the sway of the rhythm of all those great country and western singers out there.
