Over the Hedge (2006)
Rating: PG
Directors: Tim Johnson, Karey Kirkpatrick
Voices: Bruce Willis, Garry Shandling, Steve Carell, Wanda Sykes, William Shatner, Nick Nolte, and others
The movie starts with a big bang when Bruce Willis as RJ steals the bear's winter stores. In the process, he angers the bears and loses the food - chips and candy. And, he smashes the ice cooler. Of course, the bear is really really angry. He is about ready to eat RJ right then. But after a little thought, the bear changes his mind and gives RJ two weeks to get back everything or he would be die.
At the same time in another part of the forest Shandling as Verne and his group of animals are waking up from hibernation. There food stores are basically gone and they are hungry. While searching for some food, they find that the best part of the forest has been walled off from them. In that area are huge houses.
RJ watches them and decides that he can use this group of rurals to help him gather the bear's food. He shows them how to get through the fence. He shows them the best food in the housing development. And they run afoul of the housing development manager that hires a pest killer. In the process, RJ becomes a part of the group, pushing Shandler out of the top spot.
I won't spoil the rest of the plot. I just want to mention that "Hammy's Boomerang Adventure" is a must see. It is the funniest part of the whole movie. Also, this movie shows humans how animals can act when lured by junkfood. It reminds me of the Tahoe Nevada and California bears. Once these bears get a taste of chips, cookies, beer, and wine, they open the houses with their claws to get at this food.
If you get a chance to buy the DVD, there is Dwayne's Verm-Tech Infomercial, An Insider's look Behind the Hedge, Tons of Nutty Games and Activities, and "Wake Up" More hibernating features.
I do want to mention that Wanda as a Skunk is hilarious. She picks up a honey, small dog with a smelling problem. Also, Hammy is not the usual voice talent, but as you would suppose, a squirrel that tacts, runs, and twitches fast, which is a problem until the end. In fact all of the voice talent add a lot of character to the movie. Just having Bruce Willis opposite Shandling makes this a very funny movie.
My recommendations: This show is great. Adults and children alike will have a great time watching this movie. You won't be bored.
