Long, thick hair is usually associated with younger women. It seems to be an unspoken rule that a woman should cut her hair once she ages.
The same person that made that rule also said you shouldn't wear white in the winter. I don't know who came up with the variety of forks at the table, but that's just as silly.
Hair length should not be determined by age but by the type of hair and enhancing styles. Certain hairstyles are not going to look good on a woman of twenty or a woman of fifty.
Hair becomes brittle, coarser and less dense as we age and we should adjust our hairstyles accordingly. If you hair is still full as you age then wearing it long is an option. As with a woman of any age, long hair won't look well on a long face. Chin length would compliment a long face.
Many women opt for short hair with a perm, as they get older. A perm gives the hair volume and can be a good way to compensate for mild hair loss. A woman who still hair thick hair doesn't need to cut her hair short and get a perm just because it's the thing to do.
While I don't think an older woman should have long hair with bangs across her forehead personal choice is the number one factor in deciding hairstyles.
Age is not exempt from peer pressure and many older women feel they should cut their hair because their friends tell them it's correct etiquette. Who cares? There are no hair judges in the street or at the market and you won't be fined for being out of style.
The choice to cut your hair short should be based on a desire to do so or a need to do so. If you are older and have long hair and it suits you, great!
Long hair can be pinned up, worn in a bun, braided or twisted. It can be worn down with an attractive clip at the side or clipped back on the top. If you are unable to put your hair up or don't have the finger dexterity anymore to fiddle with your hair wearing it short may make more sense.
Should older women have long or short hair? Only the older woman can decide that. Everyone else may have an opinion but who doesn't?
An older woman has definitely earned the right to do as she pleases, least of all with her hair.
