2008 Olympics: Prospects for the US Olympic track and field teams

There are many US Olympic Track and Field prospects hoping to compete in this summer's games in Beijing. The US Olympic Trials are set to take place in Eugene Oregon, from June 27 until July 6. There, over a thousand track and field athletes will compete for the opportunity to represent the United States in the Olympic Games.

The men's marathon trials were completed last November, and the runners representing America this summer are Brian Sell, Ryan Hall, and Dathan Ritzenhein. The women's marathon trials are set for April 20, in Boston. The projected top finishers include Deena Kastor, Elva Dryer, Marla Runyan, Colleen De Reuck, Mary Akor, and a few others.

Here are the most likely qualifiers for the men's US Olympic team:
-Abdi Abdirahman: 5000 meters/ 10,000 meters
-Aaron Aguayo: 3000 meter steeplechase
-James Carter: 400 meter hurdles
-Bryan Clay: Decathalon
-Shawn Crawford: 100 meters/ 200 meters
-Anthony Famiglietti: 3000 meter steeplechase
-Tyson Gay: 100 meters/ 200 meters
-Kibwe Johnson: Throws
-Meb Keflezighi: 5000 meters/ 10,000 meters
-Bernard Lagat: 1500 meters/ 5000 meters
-Dan Lincoln: 3000 meter steeplechase
-LaShawn Merritt: 400 meters
-Adam Nelson: Throws
-Khadevis Robinson: 800 meters
-Galen Rupp: 5000 meters/ 10,000 meters
-Terrence Trammell: 110 meter hurdles
-Brad Walker: Pole Vault
-Jeremy Wariner: 200 meters/ 400 meters
-Alan Webb: 800 meters/ 1500 meters
-Jesse Williams: High Jump
-Aarik Wilson: Jumps

Here are the most likely qualifiers for the women's US Olympic team:
-Me'Lisa Barber: 100 meters/ 200 meters
-Jen Barringer: 3000 meter steeplechase
-Becky Breisch: Throws
-Hazel Clark: 800 meters
-Treniere Clement: 800 meters/ 1500 meters
-Torrie Edwards: 100 meters/ 200 meters
-Allyson Felix: 100 meters/ 200 meters/ 400 meters
-Shalane Flanagan: 5000 meters
-Lisa Galaviz: 3000 meter steeplechase
-Kara Goucher: 5000 meters/ 10,000 meters
-Tiombe Hurd: Jumps
-Markita James: 400 meter hurdles
-Sheena Johnson: 100 meter hurdes/ 400 meter hurdles
-Katie McGregor: 5000 meters/ 10,000 meters
-Jen Rhines: 5000 meters
-Sanya Richards: 400 meters
-Alice Schmidt: 800 meters
-Michelle Sikes: 5000 meters
-Carrie Tollefson: 1500 meters
-Lauryn Williams: 100 meters/ 200 meters

There are plenty of potential hopefuls for making the team. No one is guaranteed a spot, and they will have to earn their trip to Beijing. The US Olympic Track and Field team stands to be very competitive this summer against the world's best.
