Cockapoos (or Cockerpoos) probably the first "official" hybrid breed. They are a combination of two of the most popular companion dogs - the Toy Poodle (or sometimes the Miniature) and the Cocker Spaniel. My "old woman" was a puppy in the '80s, but there have been references to the "breed" as far back as the '50s. In Europe they are sometimes referred to as a Spoodle.

Breeding
The breed started as a cross between a pure Poodle and a pure Cocker, but since the hybrid has become more popular, they are now often a result of mating two Cockapoos. There are two types of breeders - those who continue the Poodle/Cocker parentage and those who breed only Cockapoos. There are advantages and disadvantages to both - but be sure you understand the risks before you fall in love with a little bundle of fur.

Appearance
Cockapoos can sometimes more closely resemble the Cocker and sometimes resemble the Poodle. In general they have a soft curly coat which resists shedding. They can come in all the basic Cocker and Poodle colors, including multi-colors. They are generally small - less that 20 pounds and from 10 to 15 inches tall.

Temperament
Good Cockapoos have the best characteristics of both breeds - the intelligence, and trainability of the poodle and the fun-loving, active and outgoing personality of the Cocker Spaniel. In reality, any of the characteristics, good or bad, from the Cocker or the Poodle can be found in the offspring. Before you adopt a puppy, take a good look at the personality of the parents.

Health problems
As with temperament, the health problems can be hit or miss as well. This means they can suffer from "loose knees", eye problems (progressive retinal atrophy), ear infections and seizures. They are generally healthy, and can live for well over 15 years.

Exercise requirements
They are active dogs and need regular exercise and entertainment.

Grooming
While they tend to shed very little, they do need to be clipped regularly. They look particularly cute in the puppy cut used for Poodles. They also need weekly brushing to avoid mats, and need to have their nails trimmed on a regular basis.

Lifestyle
Just like Poodles and Cockers, Cockapoos want to be a part of the action. They love to travel, they enjoy walking and meeting new people and other dogs. They make great apartment dogs, as long as they get sufficient exercise in a good long walk every day.
