The Waldorf Astoria
The Waldorf Astoria is an art deco masterpiece and since 1993 has been an official New York City landmark. The original Waldorf was built by the architect Henry Hardenbergh and opened on March 24, 1893, by the project's financier, millionaire William Waldorf Astor.
In 1929, the hotel was torn down to make way for another famous New York landmark, the Empire States building. The New Waldorf Astoria opened two years later, fifteen blocks to the north, on Park Avenue. It was so big many of its guests christened the building, A city within a city!' President Herbert Hoover himself commemorated its opening with a speech on radio.
Today, the Waldorf sits proudly within easy walking distance of numerous New York attractions. A New York City icon, the hotel boasts 1,245 luxurious rooms, three restaurants and four top-class lounges. Located on the corner of 44 street at Lexington, its bull and bear steakhouse has become one of the most famous bars in New York with its polished mahogany furnishings, great cocktails and claim to serve the best Martini's in the city.
The Waldorf also offers its guests a progressive American brassiere and a multi- starred Japanese restaurant. Each of the hotel's rooms have dual telephones with voice mail, high speed internet access, fax machines, minibar, hair dryers and large marble bathrooms.
The Waldorf was also the first hotel to be featured in a movie. The film was called Weekend at the Waldorf,' shot in 1945.
