Hotel reviews: The Timberline Hotel, Oregon

Timberline Hotel

The Timberline hotel was built, entirely by hand, at the height of America's great depression by unemployed craftspeople hired by the Federal works progress administration. The hotel was finished in a very short space of time, despite extreme weather conditions and the inexperience of some of its workers.

In September 1937, President Franklin Roosevelt gave a dedication to the completed building only fifteen months after work had started.

In 1980, the hotel's exterior was used in Stanley Kubrick's film adaptation of Steven King's The Shining'. In this movie the hotel was renamed The Overlook', with the interior shots being filmed at Elstree studios in England.

The Timberline sits at the heart of the Mount hood national forest, Clackamas County, Oregon. Inside, the hotel's rooms have remained faithful to their traditional roots with hand-made furnishings and hand-painted artwork. At the same time, guests will also find hair dryers, remote controlled television sets and telephones with voicemail and modem points within each room. The Timberline also provides a year round heated pool, whirlpool and indoor sauna.

Outside, other activities include mountain climbing, hiking, golf, mountain biking, team building exercises, fishing and river rafting. During those long summer month's the hotel's guests are offered other nearby recreational options. These include windsurfing, a scenic train ride, horseback riding and alpine slides. In the fall, they can try their hand at mushrooming.
