forward to the next chapter and found it hard to put the story down mid chapter. I didn't find the character of Henry particularly endearing, though I did like the character of Clare, and here the portrayal of a young girl right through to an old woman had a quality of reality and sense, whilst Henry's character showed weakness and disorder.
From strange beginnings, a lifetime's knowledge of another person is cherished within the pages of the book as although Clare stays firmly in the here and now, Henry has been a regular visitor to her life since early childhood, and what comes out in the story is the bonds of a friendship formed from knowing another human being that well. Nostalgic, funny, even a little lopsided at times, when the characters have to explain situations that would not normally befall a human being to family and friends, the story has become one that I shall keep and read again, and that I enjoyed very much.
It would be harsh to give away much of what the story holds, though the time travel aspect makes it different from the usual read. The way in which Henry copes with jumping from one period of his life to another, sometimes even colliding with himself at another age and in a different time, as well as the relationship with the ever patient Clare, is amusing, sad at times, frustrating at others, but very well told and fun. How does a wife keep her life in line with a time traveling husband ? Very well indeed in these circumstances, although only by the explanation and detail given to the book by the writer can a story like this work, and it does.
