Take a walk in my shoes.
Experience one day in my life.
See the anguish, the exhaustion,
The terror, the strife.
I wake up in the morning.
I look in the mirror.
A bald head, all I see -
I have cancer, its clear.
I wash my face.
A wig tops my head.
I drink coffee with my family;
There's not much to be said.
My body is small.
My limbs are so frail.
Its hard to believe,
That someday I'll prevail.
This sickness inside of me,
Eating at me to my core.
Making every step painful,
Simple tasks, now a chore.
I tell my family things are okay -
Mommy will be fine.
I must protect them;
This battle is mine.
I go to the hospital.
Sterility - my only friend,
I sigh and sit down,
Wishing this battle would end.
So exasperated, so wilted.
So frustrated, so weak.
The chemo takes over.
So tired, so meek.
Staring up at the ceiling,
Bonding with the nothing that's there.
Feeling like I don't belong -
An outcast everywhere.
Recalling the times
When I once felt alive,
So active and vibrant!
Now, I fight to survive.
I wonder, why me?
Was it something I did?
Some retribution for something,
In the past I had said?
It doesn't really matter.
I am where I am.
I can only try to survive each day,
The best that I can.
The minutes turn to hours.
The day turns to night.
I finally get home,
I look like quite a sight.
I become breathless as I walk,
Struggle to enter the door.
I need help up the steps.
I can't do them alone anymore.
I crawl into my bed,
My muscles, so numb.
Its only eight P.M.,
My day is now done.
My eyes become heavy,
My breathing so light.
I see only blackness,
As I slip into the night.
The next time you put on your shoes,
Please remember your experience mine.
Put things in perspective.
Appreciate feeling fine.
Value your health,
Your laugh and your smile.
Don't complain about exercising.
Enjoy walking that mile.
Don't complain if you wake up,
And your hair is in knots.
Remember, you're lucky,
That its hair that you've got.
Hold dear the hard days.
Remember they could always be worse.
Take nothing for granted.
Its all a blessing, of course.
Sing while in the shower.
Dance while you still can.
Go to your children's activities.
Hold your husband's hand.
For a day in my life,
Is a walk you'll not forget.
Treasure each day.
Its something you'll never regret.

Here inside this body
Lives a ME that no one knows
A ME that's hard to understand
A ME I haven't chose
To be bitter and misgiving

A day in my life
A sky of often-grey
A never-lifting cloud
An endless fall of rain
A bout of shining sun
Playing peek-a-boo
