Rape is a tragedy unto itself but making false assumptions regarding the crime only adds insult to injury.
Unless a person has been a victim of rape or has a loved one who was a victim, they are not likely to comprehend the truth and facts of rape.
It is usually the people who cannot comprehend the truth of rape that make wild assumptions and false accusations. They honestly believe that a woman (or man) who is behaving in a sexual manner is asking for it. They may be leaving themselves wide open for a slew of sexually transmitted diseases, unwanted pregnancy and a reputation that will stain them but they are not asking to be raped.
If rape were a crime that stemmed from uncontrollable sexual urges and a victim of rape behaved in a promiscuous manner then I would call the victim irresponsible.
Rape victims cannot be considered irresponsible which somehow insinuates that their lack of action or duty promoted the crime.
Rape is a violent crime that is manifested sexually though it has nothing to do with sexuality, erotica or sensuality.
In fact, most rapists are sexually dysfunctional in a normal setting. Arousal is not what triggers the act of rape, but disgust. An intended victim may have all the traits of an individual who abused the rapist and therefore the rapist will punish the victim.
When a person is raped their world is fallen. It's a challenge to get through the legal system especially knowing the outcome is going to be minimal. The hardest part for a rape survivor is being aware that there are people who still mistakenly believe that victims hold a responsibility for the crime.
Rape victims suffer not only physical harm but also severe psychological damage. Damage that some never recover from. Telling these people that they were irresponsible only deepens the guilt and shame they already struggle with.
Some victims of rape may be unaware of self-defense techniques that can prevent the crime or stop it from becoming a murder. Not learning how to defend yourself can make you irresponsible in a sense, but if you are raped that does not make you irresponsible.
The responsibility of rape lies with the rapist and the psychological demons that prey on their mind. The blame for rape lies with the rapist. The motivation for rape comes from the rapist.
If someone steals a car they are to blame. The dealership didn't ask for it by not having an up to date security system. Wrong is wrong. It's that simple.
