Travel destinations: Rome, Italy

Mention Rome and images of ancient ruins and magnificent structures spring to mind. To say that Rome is the city of all cities will not be too far from the truth, as it offers an all-rounded experience of art, culture history and not to mention the holy Vatican City.

Rome is the largest city in Italy and the country's capital. The city's history dates back to over three thousand years ago, where it played a crucial role in the Roman Empire. Founded in 753 BC, Rome became a Republic in 509 BC, and by the time of the Republic's end, it has evolved to be a grandiose city dominating the whole of the Mediterranean. This grandeur intensified under Caesar Augustus rule and was carried on by his successors.

Rome's artistic atmosphere was cultivated in 16th century, when it became the centre of the Baroque style of art, which leaves its legacy in the architecture of Rome.

With such a rich background, it's no wonder that Rome, labeled the Eternal City, has become one of the most significant travel destinations of the world, with its archaeological heritage and its artistic landscape.

Sightseeing in Rome can be both thrilling and tiring, with the sheer amount of sights to visit, with churches, ancient ruins, monuments, museums and historical buildings.

There's nothing else better to kick-start a holiday in Rome than visiting one of the most famous sights in Rome- the magnificent Roman Colosseum; never mind that it has bowed to the harshness of nature, because even in its battered state, the Colosseum remains one of the few architecture greats in the world. Known in the ancient world as "Flavian Amphiteater", the Colosseum was host to around 450 years of gladiatorial combats and wild beast hunts. The Colossuem measures 48 metres in height, 188 metres in length and 156 metres in width. Underneath the arena is an intricate underground network of tunnels and cages where gladiators and animals were held before the contests start. Numerous trapdoors can also be found, for hiding animals. Visitors can get a pretty good idea of the Colosseum by walking around its exterior, but if possible, do enter it to get a better sense of the building structure, a view of the seating areas, and last of all, to take in the scale of the building.

Next in line of famous Roman monuments is the Roman Forum, once the downtown area of the ancient city, where commerce, trading and business took place. Now, some 2000 years later, a few of the buildings remain visible, in various states of ruins. But these
