During the 1960s there was to much going on that anything that proved to be a distraction from daily life was well accepted. Amongst the political upheaval happening throughout the world, there was also a counter-culture and social revolution developing. JFK became president and was assassinated; Italy was forming a left-of-center government; the Labour Party gained control of Britain. While all this was going on, cinematics was pushing forward in many areas, including in the fantasy genre.
-The Absent-Minded Professor-
Nowadays, when people hear this title, they automatically think of the more recent debut of Flubber staring Robin Williams. What many don't realize is that this story about an absent-minded professor of physical chemistry originated in the cinema realm in 1960 under the direction of Robert Stevenson. When Professor Brainard comes around to the invention of flubber, or flying rubber, hilarious situations ensue in which the flubber seems to be more of a flounder than not.
-Babes in Toyland-
This 1961 musical tale seems to be the beginning point where toys and well-known nursery rhyme characters begin to take on a life of their own. In this film, Mary Contrary and Tom Piper, two well known Mother Goose characters, are caught up in a world of lies and deceit. The sinister miser, Barnaby wishes to marry Mary himself and will stop at nothing until he does so. Directed by Jack Donohue and produced by Disney, this movie is one that many still recall today as a great piece of family entertainment.
-Mary Poppins-
If one didn't know better, they could assume that Disney was the only company producing and fantasy movies. This was their third live-action hit of the 1960s. Starring Julie Andrews as the wonderful Mary Poppins, this 1964 musical has captured hearts and ears from the very beginning. While dealing with the concept of the difficulties of single parenthood, this movie also touches on the effects that a parent's behavior, words, and actions can have on a child.
-Batman-
In the beginning, there was the comic book. Than came Adam West as Batman and Burt War as Robin. The two men captured the attention of the caped crusader's fans to the point in which this 1966 movie spun off from the live-action series. While there may have been other movies that took their basis from comic books, this was the first one to develop what could be called a cult following.
