Renewable Energy
Wind power is an alternative renewable source of energy that is considered to be a clean source of energy. The potential energy generated by wind power may well be enormous, but at this time it represents only a small portion of the United States electrical generating capacity. The effectiveness of wind power generation depends greatly upon site location and weather type. Wind turbine sites are chosen after careful analysis of the average wind speed and air density of a potential location and a steady wind is preferred to a changeable wind for optimum electrical energy output.
A wind turbine uses wind to make electricity. The larger the wind turbine is, the greater its capacity is for electrical production. When the wind turns the blades of the turbine, a shaft connected to a generator spins and makes the electricity. The electricity is sent through transmission and distribution lines to a substation, and then passed on for use in homes, businesses and schools. With increasing energy demands the use of wind power can provide an excellent means to produce clean energy yet the potential of this natural renewable energy resource is largely untapped. The expense for producing these wind farms is extremely high and because the energy source is oftentimes intermittent the venture can be somewhat risky. Recent federal and state incentives will likely increase the number of wind farm projects developed around the United States. The use of wind energy is likely to increase over the coming years due to rising gas and oil prices. Wind developers will have to choose their site locations with care or they will likely have problems gaining approval for wind farms.
The perpetual noise of the windmills, scenic destruction, wildlife damage and loss of property values will limit their viability in certain areas but with careful planning, wind power integration can provide a clean energy alternative for an extended future here on earth. We must find alternative energy sources that will meet our ever growing demands and needs while protecting the atmosphere, biosphere, and hydrosphere from the abuse inflicted by mankind.
