Is there a "cure" for insomnia? This largely depends on whether or not the insomnia is chronic (ongoing...it's been happening for a long time) or acute (usually a sudden, abrupt onset). Determining the type of insomnia is essential to successful treatment.
In the case of chronic insomnia, there is some success with drugs like Ambien or Lunesta. Ideally, the insomniac will only need to take the pill for a week and then discontinue it; having by then formed a more natural and successful sleep pattern. Some studies show that these drugs are habit forming.
If the insomnia is due to a specific cause; like a serious illness or tragedy, a doctor may prefer to prescribe a benzodiazapine; like Valium, Ativan or more frequently, Xanax. These drugs are typically used to treat nervous disorders and have a tranquilizing effect. Hopefully when the crisis passes, the person will not need medication to manage their sleep.
Obviously, chronic insomnia is usually more deeply rooted, and more difficult to treat. Sometimes even the drugs don't work.
People tell me that they have had some success using the dietary supplement Melatonin.
Keeping a calm and peaceful environment is helpful. Create a "sleep chamber" that you find comforting and inviting.
Above all, don't worry about not sleeping. Try to relax. A warm bath, some hot tea(or cocoa) some loose fitting soft PJs...you're on your way....
