Band reviews: Journey

to Hawaii to hike. He sustained a major injury that would lead to a diagnosis of a degenerative hip condition, rendering him unable to perform unless he were to have a major hip replacement surgery. Perry felt this was not a band decision but a personal one. After a lot of back and forth between the band, Perry finally decided to leave Journey, allowing them to regroup with a new lead singer.

That they did, with Steve Augeri. They contributed a song to the movie "Armageddon" as well as released "Arrival", which gave them a hit on adult contemporary radio. Augeri would also be replaced after experiencing problems with his voice due to a throat infection. Jeff Scott Soto held the reigns for a year, before being replaced himself with Arnel Pineda, after Neal caught his Journey cover songs on the wildly popular YouTube.

Through it all, no matter the lineup, Journey has persevered. Though some fans, myself included, long for the day Steve Perry and his former band mates could patch things up and tour again, we can be comforted by the work they left behind. Perry has been instrumental in producing two DVDs which show Journey at the height of their popularity.

In 2005, the band received their star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, an event where Perry was present.

In 2000 the band became eligible to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, but have so far been overlooked. But thanks to the rise of 80s nostalgia, Journey has experienced new found exposure to new generations thanks to shows like "Laguna Beach", where after it was played the song "Don't Stop Believing" reached number 8 on the iTunes charts.

But it didn't stop there. Thanks to exposure during various movies like "Monster", the 2005 World Series, Family Guy, the Sopranos and even a Hillary Clinton campaign video, "Don't Stop Believing", arguably the signature track of the band, has finally reached the number 1 position - via iTunes.

Which proves how influential this "arena rock" band from San Francisco has truly become. Journey - truly one of the greatest rock bands of our era.
